THE TEXT

❶ It is amazing how one small act of kindness can change someone's life. Such was the case with Chris Salvatore, 26, and his 84-year-old neighbour Norma Cook. When Chris moved into his new apartment in California, he had no idea that the curious elderly woman staring at him from her kitchen window would become one of his best friends. Over the course of their five-year friendship, they shared precious memories from pizza nights to birthday parties, holidays and endless laughs.

❷ Over time, Chris and Norma felt like a family. They became like a grandson and a grandmother. So, when Norma was severely ill at 89, the doctors decided that it would no longer be safe for her to live on her own. Without hesitating, Chris proposed to take care of her in his apartment. Norma was thrilled by the offer. Chris cooked for her, and the two spent time together watching the news, talking and sharing meals.

❸ A few months later, Norma died, and Chris was heartbroken. However, their relationship has stuck with him for so long. The love and care they shared is a truly shining example that just a little kindness really goes a long way. "I feel her watching over me and it is a happy feeling. I am forever a changed man and I thank this magnificent lady for everything she has taught me," he said.
